Moshe Feldenkrais
Dr. Moshe (mo-shay) Feldenkrais was an Israeli Scientist (1902-1984). A man of many gifts, interests and capabilities, he was physically very strong as well as intellectually accomplished. After walking from Ukraine to Palestine, he helped in the constructions of numerous buildings in Tel-Aviv. To further his studies, he went to Paris where he gained degrees in electrical and mechanical engineering. He worked as a nuclear physicist with Frédéric Joliot-Curie, Nobel Laureate and director of the Curie Institute.Moshe developed an electronic antisubmarine detection system. At the same time, he trained in Judo, the first European to earn a black belt.
An old soccer knee injury became the source for the
method he was able to create to solve his own pain and function. Applying his scientific thinking to the skeleton as an engineered structure brought an entirely new way to work with the body and its limitations. In spite of dire warnings for the function of his knee, he was able to design movement that allowed his knee to perform properly. His creation of this somatic education is the source for his FELDENKRAIS METHOD® Awareness Through Movement® and Functional Integration® lessons.
